Eastern Investments Limited (EIL) is a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) that was founded in 1927 as one of the Specified Companies of Bird & Co. Ltd. However, the control of Bird & Company Ltd was acquired by the Government of India after the Bird & Company Ltd. (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertaking and Other Properties) Act, 1980 (67 of 1980) was passed.
This act gave the Central Government control over the management of Specified Companies like Eastern Investments Limited to prevent mismanagement.
On 19th March, 2010, Eastern Investments Limited (EIL) became a PSU, and it is currently listed on Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE). Eastern Investments Limited is the parent company of The Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited and The Bisra Stone Lime Company Limited, and it became a subsidiary of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) on 5th January 2011.
The primary source of revenue for Eastern Investments Limited is from dividends earned from Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited (OMDC) and interest gained on term deposits. As mentioned above, Eastern Investments Limited is the parent company of The Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited (OMDC) and The Bisra Stone Lime Company Limited. Therefore, it is equally important to know about both of the subsdiaries.
– Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited (OMDC):
On August 16, 1918, The Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited (OMDC) was established as one of the specified companies of Bird & Co. Ltd. However, after the enactment of the Bird & Co. Ltd. Act, Bird & Co. Ltd. came under the control of the Government of India.
OMDC became a Schedule-B CPSE on March 19, 2010, and a subsidiary of Eastern Investments Limited (EIL), which also became a PSU on the same day. The company is listed on the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), and has been granted trading permission to operate under the permitted category in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
OMDC operates six mining leases for Iron Ore and Manganese Ore in Barbil, located in the district of Keonjhar, Odisha. Three leases, namely Dalki Manganese Mines, Kolha-Roida Iron & Manganese mines, and Thakurani Iron & Manganese Mines, are in the name of Bharat Process and Mechanical Engineers’ Ltd. (BPMEL), but OMDC operates them under Power of Attorney. The remaining three mines, Belkundi Iron & Manganese Mines, Bagiaburu Iron Mines, and Bhadrasahi Iron & Manganese Mines, are in the name of OMDC.
The mining lease validity for all three of these OMDC Mines has been extended by the Government of Odisha until August 15, 2026, October 10, 2041, and September 30, 2030, respectively.
None of the mines are currently operational due to the lack of statutory clearances, but the company is taking necessary actions to start mining. Together, all six mines have an estimated reserve of about 201 million tonnes of Iron Ore and 27 million tonnes of Manganese Ore.
– The Bisra Stone Lime Company Limited:
The Bisra Stone Lime Company Limited (BSLC) was incorporated on 1st day of October, 1910. BSLC was one of the Specified Companies of Bird & Co. Ltd. Bird & Company Ltd came under the control of Government of India after enactment of Bird & Company Ltd.(Acquisition and Transfer of Undertaking and Other Properties) Act, 1980 (67 of 1980).
The paid-up capital of BSLC is Rs. 87.29 crores consisting of 8,72,86,252 shares of Rs. 10 each. The company is listed at Calcutta Stock Exchange. The main activities of the company are mining and marketing of limestone and dolomite.
The mines are located at Birmitrapur in the district of Sundargarh, Orissa. The BSLC is having reserves of about 287 million tons of dolomite & 367 million tons of limestone. The main buyers of BSLC products (Dolomite & Limestone) are Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Steel Plants.
The company has received Environment Clearance (EC) for enhancing production to 5.26 Million Tons per annum of Dolomite and Limestone. The Company is in the process of drawing up a plan for improving the business of the Company.
